Lotus Lantern Festival, 23-24 May 2020, Jongno-gu and Gangnam-gu, Seoul

VENUE: Areas of Jogyesa Temple in Jonggak, Cheonggyecheon Stream and Gwanghwamun Square in Jongno-gu plus Bongeunsa Temple in Gangnam-gu, Seoul

NOTICE: Rescheduled from 24-26 April to 23-24 May 2020 due to COVID-19 concerns. Traditional program/activities likely to be curtailed depending on social distancing policies. Check the festival website or contact KTO's 1330 helpline prior to making plans on the day. The description below applies to the usual program.

DESCRIPTION: The Lotus Lantern Festival (Yeon Deung Hoe) is held annually on Buddha's Birthday (8th day of the 4th month of the lunar calendar). Major events include an exhibition of traditional lanterns and a lantern parade.
Visitors can make lotus lanterns, create Buddhist art, try temple food and play traditional Korean folk. On offer are also traditional Korean folk performers and performers from Asian Buddhist communities. The grand finale of the festival features a mini lantern parade around Insa-dong accompanied by the singing and dancing of the Lotus Lantern Performance Groups.

2020 Schedule:
Saturday 23 May - Lantern Parade (TBC)
Sunday 24 May - Traditional Cultural Event (TBC)

DIRECTIONS:
Jogyesa Temple 
Jonggak Station (Seoul Subway Line 1), Exit 2. Walk straight for approx. 200m to arrive at Jogyesa Temple.
Anguk Station (Line 3) and go straight to the cross road. Turn left and go about 150m

Bongeunsa Temple
Samgseong Station (Seoul Subway Line 2), Exit 6.
Walk straight for approx. 600m, and turn left.
Walk straight for approx. 150m to arrive at Bongeunsa Temple.
