Driving in Korea

Are vehicle inspections also required by foreign car owners?

All drivers are required by the Automobile Management Act to take their vehicles in for regular checkups (including exhaust emission close inspection test.) This inspection should be completed every two years during the period between the initial vehicle registration day and the fourth year. The regulation applies to everyone, foreign residents included, who owns a car.

Owners must ensure that the inspections is completed within 60 days  - either before or after - the applicable period.  If this is not done, the owner will incur penalties that will have to be paid before the car can be sold, or often re-insured.For the first month (30 days) after the inspection expiration date, the owner will be charged W20,000. After 30 days, the penalty increased by W10,000 every three days to a maximum of W300,000.

Regular vehicle inspection are available from the Korea Transportation Safety Authority or Agent designated by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime.

You must present your automobile registration certificate and proof of insurance at the time of inspection.

For more information on inspections, including the location of an inspection center in Seoul, see the mandatory vehicle information page.
