Dulwich College Seoul, Toddler to Year 8, Seocho-gu, Seoul
A newly built school, Dulwich College Seoul (DCSL) opened its doors in September 2010 in the Banpo area of the Seocho Distrist of Seoul - just accross the Banpo Bridge. With a capacity for 500 students, DCSL is initially offering places to predominantly expatriate students from Toddler to Year 8 (ages 18 months to 14 years).
The DCSL curriculum follows the best practice of the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework and English National Curriculum, adapted for our international setting. The language of instruction is English. As with all Dulwich Colleges, Dulwich College Seoul is academically selective with children having to pass tests to enter the school, including a test of their English language ability. The curriculum is thematic-based to ensure that students are able to make sense of the increasing inter-connectedness and complexity of the modern world.
Early Years & Key Stage 1 (Toddler to Year 2: ages 18 mths to 7 years)
Classes in Nursery and Reception work within the English Early Years Foundation Stage Framework (EYFS). Children’s development is nurtured through the acquisition of the early learning goals covering six different areas of learning. The curriculum is holistic, offering the children the chance to learn through a range of topics and themes both indoors and outdoors. Learning is nurtured through a mixture of adult-led and child-initiated activities in a language-rich environment.
Key Stage 2 & 3 (Year 3 to Year 8: ages 7 to 14 years)
A smooth transition from the early learning goals of the EYFS introduces the students to the English National Curriculum (ENC) through a series of topic-based units. Strong emphasis is placed upon Numeracy, Science, Literacy and Information Communication Technology skills, both as discrete subjects and as cross-curricular links. The range of topics in each year group is carefully chosen to allow for the full coverage of key skills, knowledge and understanding in a variety of different class-based subjects in addition to the above, including Art, Design Technology, Geography, History, Cultural Studies and Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE).This ensures the continuity and progression of the curriculum, whilst allowing children full scope to utilise their natural curiosity and ensure that they can always have access to the most challenging learning experiences.
Throughout all the age phases of the College, children are given numerous opportunities to study and appreciate the proud history and vibrant culture of our host country. Korean Studies are taught through separate lessons and study units, in addition to celebrating key national events and festivals. The Korean language is taught after-school from Year 2 onwards to host country nationals for three hours per week.
Specialist Teaching
Throughout the Primary years the special bond formed with the class teachers provides the students with their core learning experiences. However, we also aim to equip the children with skills in a full range of subjects that are best taught by specialist teachers. These subjects include Physical Education, Music, Drama/Performance and Mandarin. They are taught for varying amounts of time from Reception upwards. DCSL will be able to draw on the expertise of its fellow Colleges in China to ensure that Mandarin is a major subject in our curriculum, taught at different levels of ability. All the above subjects will maximise the students’ potential over a broad spectrum of interests, providing them with the opportunity to learn musical instruments and obtain professional certification, perform in dramatic productions and take part in competitive sporting events.
English As An Additional Language (EAL)
A limited number of EAL students will be admitted to the College if they are deemed to have the academic potential to succeed in an English language medium school. They will receive extra support until they have reached the expected levels of language proficiency.
