Your chance to volunteer to help clean up the oil spill

Your chance to volunteer t...

What a great New Year's Resolution to make - joining the volunteers who are helping clean up the oil spill in Chungnam Province. Reports have confirmed that it will take years and years before the area recovers, if it ever does. However, the more we do now, the better the chances and hopefully, the lesser the impact on the environment.

A group of volunteers will be leaving from Daejeon at 7AM on Saturday morning, 12 January, to head out to help. There are still spaces left on the buses. Volunteers from Seoul could go down Friday night - the Daejon group can suggest places where you can stay overnight. Overnight accomodations in Yuseong will cost about W40-50,000.

For more information on the group: www.iguidekorea.com/taeanoilspill.html
You can register directly through them or contact events@korea4expats.com by Thursday Noon 8 January. Please put your cell number in the message.

If you cannot make it this coming weekend, but would like to help, you can also  help in other ways or on another day.

Organising another day of volunteering: If you'd like to volunteer to help but can't this coming weekend, please contact events@korea4expats.com and we will arrange another weekend in a week or two.

Here are others ways in which you can help as well:
1) Donations of goods: Authorities and volunteers need any of the following items you can donate:

-- used winter clothing
-- old towels or any other old cloth that can help absorb oil
-- personal protective gear such as face masks, rain coats, rubber boots, and gloves.

To send donated goods, address them to:

The County Disaster Relief Center
96, Nammoon-ri, Taean-eup, Taean-gun, South Chungcheong Province
Tel: 041-670-2645 through 2653

2) Volunteering:

The Taean County Relief Center is receiving applications from individual volunteers or organizations via telephone (042-670-2645 through 2653) or through its website at www.taean.go. kr.

Applications should be made at least one day in advance so that the relief center can assign volunteers to the most-needed area.

Please note that volunteers are required to bring with them their own protective gear including raincoats, boots, and gloves. Please note also that there is no interpretation service available for foreigners, so a basic command of the Korean language is needed.

3) Donation of Money:

Donations of money to assist in the clean-up operation are being received by the South Choongcheong Provincial Government at the following account:

Nonghyup Bank, Account No.: 471-01-002107, held in the name of: The Governor of South Choongcheong Province.
