What is Therapy/Counseling?
From time to time we all feel stuck or overwhelmed, like we have lost our way, or when fear, anxiety and hopelessness become uninvited guests that have outstayed their welcome. While these ups and downs are normal parts of life, concerns can take hold more easily when transition and upheaval are part of the equation.
Sometimes the support of a partner, a spouse or a good friend can help sort out problems. At other times we can draw on our own wisdom, skills and past experience to resolve our concerns. In a different environment however, the skills and strategies that are tried and true may not be as effective as usual. Sometimes we know that what we are doing and how we are responding is not helpful and yet we are bereft of alternative ideas or actions. At these times, the support of a trained professional therapist can be crucial in facilitating positive change, helping us to move to a preferred place that gives us more of what we want and less of what we don't want in our lives.
Professional counselors provide a context for confidential, facilitated, intentional and structured conversations that promote sustainable strategies. Therapy provided in a culturally appropriate way that is flexible and fits with individual, couple and family needs can add value to people's lives, assist in improving difficult situations and increase overall life satisfaction. Therapy can assist in regaining clarity, focus and purpose so that we can have and sustain our preferred lives.
Therapy moves beyond typical conversation to engage people in a deeper and richer level of thinking and behaving by weaving together theories, models, strategies and techniques in structured ways to promote movement and growth. Individual counselors may choose to work from an integrated approach, blending many of these or to be more of a purist, working from one specific approach. Regardless, you have the right to be informed about the approach, process and your options - both before and during the counseling process.
Research has demonstrated the value of therapy for both individuals and those in relationship systems (couples or families). Consider for a moment how your life might be improved. What if....
...your negative thought patterns were replaced with more helpful ones?
...you and your partner developed better communication patterns?
...you felt less isolated?
...you felt a greater sense of direction?
...
...
Imagine the possibilities...
