Violence Against Women

While women have made great strides over the past 15-20 years, they are still far from equal in Korean society. The 21st century brought changes to the depiction of women in Korean dramas. Until then, for the hero to slap or stike a woman (a 'bad' woman or a 'good woman' who may have been or not related to him), was quite common. There is not as much of that kind of violence on television these days. That said, Korean media report that statistics reveal that violence against women, especially in the context of dating or courship, is prevalent in South Korea.

Research conducted by the Korea Women's Hot Line revealed that up to 50% of Korean women have been physically abused by their romantic partners at least once in their lives and that almost 90% of the survey respondeents reported having been either physically or emotionally abused by their romantic partner.

In 2015, the Korean Women’s Development Institute reported that more than half of South Korean men surveyed did not object to expressions such as “Kimchinyeo” and “Doenjangnyeo,” which describe “materialistic Korean women.” Such terms, which are considered derogatory to women, are widely used on social media and other platforms.

Voyeuristic sexual crimes against women, such as taking pictures of body parts in public spaces have reportedly dramatically increased since 2005. The number of reported sexual offenses on the subway has surged from 1,031 in 2012 to 1,356 in 2015. According to the data released by the National Police Agency and Seoul Metropolitan government, the number of physical sex crimes, such as groping, stood at 725 while 631 people were reported to the police for intrusive photography last year. A great many more go unreported.
