ATM Functions-Translation Korean-English
While many ATM (automatic teller machine) units and/or functions are available in English (and other languages for some banks) there are functions that have not been translated and machines that are in Korean only. The following is intended to allow you to use all ATM's and to have access to a fuller range of options than those available in English.
Deposit 입금 (ipkkym)
① Insert your Passbook or card
② Select either 현금(cash), 수표(check)
③ Once you’ve inserted your cash in the drawer, press 닫기 (close).
Insert checks - one by one - into the slot.
④ Once the deposited amount appears on the screen, click on 확인 (Confirm) if the amount shown is correct or 취소(Cancel) if it is not and you want to terminate the transaction and start again.
Withdrawal 출금 (chulkkym)
① Insert your Passbook or card, enter your PIN when 비밀번호를 입력하세요 (Enter your PIN CODE aka secret number) appear on the screen.
② Press: 현금(cash) or 표(check) or 현금/표 (combination cash/cheque) depending on your preference.
③ Select the amount you want from the list on the screen (always in increments of W10,000). To select an amount not indicated, press 기타 (Other). Type in the amount of cash you want, then press 원 (won) on the right bottom side. This function works only for cash as checks come in denominations of W100,000 only. Note: some older machines use the traditional system of counting money – rather than typing in 100000 you would type 10 which would appear as something like 10 x (10x10,000 = 100,000)
Transfer 이체 (e-che) – possible even if you don’t have a bank account
It is possible to transfer money locally through an ATM even if you don’t have a Korean bank account. Following are instructions for those both situations: have and do not have a Korean bank account. While you can transfer in English (or other languages) when you do have an account, the steps for transferring without are in Korean only.
The ATM screen offers transfer choice options: 계좌이체 (transfer between accounts), 무통장송금 (transfer without bank account or transfer to your bank account from other bank’s ATM). It is not necessary to insert your ATM/Cheque card or passbook to begin the process (You will have to do so later in the transfer between accounts process: 계좌이체 but not in the other: 무통장송금 ).
① If you have a Korean bank account: press 계좌이체 (transfer between accounts), enter your pin code when you see the 비밀번호를 입력하세요 (Enter your PIN CODE) message
i. On the screen, select the recipient’s bank (은행) from the list provided: 외환은행 (KEB), 신한은행 (Shinhan), 씨티은행 (Citibank) etc. For the complete list, see below this page for the List of Korean Financial Institutions.
ⅱ. The following phrase will appear 수취인의 계좌번호를 누르신 후 확인 버튼을 눌러주세요 (enter recipient’s account number and press 확인 to confirm.)
ⅲ. Enter the amount of the transfer, then press 원 (won) on the bottom right of the screen.
ⅳ. The recipient’s name and transfer amount will appear on the screen. Press 확인 (Confirm) if the information is correct.
Press 취소 (Cancel) if anything is wrong. You can then begin again.
② If you do not have a Korean bank or if you want to transfer (deposit) cash to your own bank account from another bank, the instructions are in Korean only: 무통장송금 (transfer without bank account or transfer to your bank account from another bank’s ATM).
i-iii. Follow the 계좌이체 steps from ⅰto ⅲ above.
ⅳ. If you deposit cash, put it in the drawer that will open up and then press 닫기 (close) to close the drawer.
ⅴ. Enter your mobile/cell phone number or name so that the recipient can see who sent the money (the only purpose of giving the cell number is to provide information for the recipient so generally no need to worry about accuracy/typos).
ⅵ. The recipient’s name and the amount transferred will appear on the screen. Press 확인 (Confirm) if the amount is correct or 취소 (Cancel) if it is not.
Balance Inquiry 예금조회 (yekkym johwe)
In English, you have only the option of seeing your balance, whereas in Korean you can see the transactions over a period of time – you select the time frame.
① Insert your Passbook or card, enter your pin code when you see 비밀번호를 입력하세요 (Enter your PIN CODE, aka secret number) message and the key board appears on the screen
② You will see a number of time period options: 당일 (Today), 1주일 (1week), 15일 (15days), 1개월 (1month), etc. Once you’ve selected your option, the transactions in your account during that period will appear on the screen.
③ Press 확인 (Confirm) to end the process.
Passbook update 통장정리 (ttong jjang jongli)
Some banks will have an English ‘Passbook update’ option, but many do not. In that case look for 통장정리 on the opening screen.
① Open your passbook to the last page on which a transaction has been printed and on which transaction lines are still available – you see numbers to the left of the page. (This is important because if you still have a space remaining on a page but you insert from a new page, the transactions will be printed at the bottom of the new page – the machine turns the page to a new one when all lines have been filled).
② Inset your open passbook into the wider slot on the ATM.
③ Your latest transactions will be printed on then comes out.
Enlarge Screen Image 화면확대 (hwamyeon hwakdae)
This function enlarges the images/writing on the screen to enable those with vision issues to see better.
You'll find a summary list of ATM functions and a list of Korean banks/financial institutions in this section (see subject headings below).
