What can I do if my employer refuses to give me my severance pay?
Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon situation for English teachers. You are eligible for severance (aka retirement pay) if you have worked for a company with more than 5 employees and if you have completed 12 months of work. (This is one of the reasons some employers fire people - especially those who are not renewing their contracts - before the entire 12 months have been completed. For more information or to lodge a complaint, you can contact the Ministry of Labor at 1350 (extension 7 for English) or explain your situation on-line.
