Is my employer obligated to provide me with medical insurance?

The Health Insurance Act stipulates that all employees who work 80 Hours or more must participate in a Health Insurance Plan and that any company that employs more than 5 Foreign workers must enroll the Foreign Workers in a Health Insurance program.  This means that your employer should enroll you in the program and must pay 50% of the fees. You pay the other 50%.

However, if you don't meet the conditions mentioned above, or if your employer has registered you as an independant contractor or has found some other way around the act, you can still arrange to be covered by the national health insurance plan.

For more complete information, go to the Working & Business Section of this site, to the Health Insurance Coverage column or go directly to the Getting Korean Health Insurance Coverage page.
