Government Regs

How can I make sure that my employer is paying the tax they deduct from my salary to the government?

The Korean National Tax Service is aware of this issue. However, the onus is on you, the foreign employee, to make sure that the taxes withheld are, in fact, being paid. If they aren’t, it’s the employee who will have problems either in Korea or with the Tax Services in her/his home country.

In February (or if you are leaving your position), you should ask your employer to give you a Receipt for Withholding and should he/she refuse, contact the NTS immediately. If you are declaring business income, you can ask each month for a copy of the Receipt of Withholding.

To contact the NTS call 02-397-1440.
To find your local tax office, go to the Korean National Tax Service websit: http://www.nts.go.kr/eng/
