What is Haechi? Why is it the symbol of Seoul?

The `Haechi'' is an imaginary creature that was chosen as the symbolic icon of the city of Seoul in 2009. Also known as Haetae, it’s a lion-like horned creature that often appears in Korean myths as a guardian against fire and disasters.

The mythical animal is believed to protect against injustice, disruptions, violent change and disasters, including fires. A symbol of justice, the Haechi, because of its ability to "eat fire", is also thought to be a symbol of water as well.

At one time, there allegedly were two Haetae status along Gwhanghamun Road in front of Gyeongbok Palace. Their purpose was to protect some vulnerable areas identified through Pungsu-jin, the Korean term for Feng-shui (geomancy).
