Why does my house have two different numbers?
A few years ago, Seoul Metropolitan Government began re-assigning house numbers to replace the traditional system in which buildings were assigned based on when they were built as opposed to sequential. Now the numbers follow each other and it is easier to find the building. However, it's taking time for the old numbers to be phased out. For the moment, many buildings show 2 different 'addresses'.
As of 29 July 2011, all buildings and streets in Korea are required to begin using the new address system. However, the old addresses will continue to be recognised until 31 December 2013. In other words, the two systems will be used concurrently.
To find out your new address, see the Public Administration Ministry's website. There is information in English, but as of 1 August 2011, it is not possible to look up your new address in English. We expect this issue will be dealt with eventually.
