What childcare options are available in Korea?

It is possible to hire local (Korean) home help or depending on your visa status and income, a foreign maid or nanny. Some sponsored foreign maids/nannies will also work for other people on an hourly basis. (note that Korean law requires that sponsored foreign nationals work only for their sponsoring employer). Daycare, nurseries and preschools are another option.

Foreign hourly maid/nanny service: generally around W10,000/hour; can be a little higher evenings or weekends.

Sponsored* foreign maid/nanny: US$700 per month for live in; and KRW1.2million per month for live out - this is for Monday to Friday and a half day on Saturday.  For live out, additional babysitting maybe charged at KRW10,000 per hour. Foreign maids will normally clean as well as look after children.

Korean home help (maid/nanny): rates of pay start at KRW1.4million per month for Monday to Friday only. Most will usually only look after the children and possibly cook. Some speak English well while many are not very fluent.

There are many English speaking nurseries and preschools. However, many of these have limited hours (for example 9AM to 2:30PM). Most also require children be 2 yearls old or more.

Korean daycares are generally open 12 hours a day. They cost KRW 300,000 to 400,000 per month and will take babies from 6 months.
