Are there rules about where one stands on an escalator?

Generally, you stand on the right if you're 'riding' it and walk up, past everyone, from the left. If you stand on the left, you're blocking someone's more rapid ascent.

That said, there are signs in an increasing number of subway stations, encouraging people to stand on both sides of the escalator because of wear and tear on the equipment on one side of the steps.
